JACKSONVILLE JOKERS

The first season in Jacksonville has been filled with some ups and downs for the Panthers minor league team. The Jokers hovered around 2nd or 3rd in the Conference for the first half of the season.

But they have fallen lately and currently sit 6th in the Eastern Conference. They appear to be a playoff contender but need to step up their play to make noise in the post-season.

CURRENT LINES:

Taticek - Hagman - Kolnik

Moore - Bednar - Campbell

Green - Schaefer - Tripp

Moore - Olson - Meloche

DEFENSE PAIRINGS:

Elliott - Pothier

Pilar - Rossiter

Kudroc - McNeill

Dipenta

GOALIES: Jan Lasak has taken over from Simon Lajeunesse as the number goalie. Jan was supposed to be in the ECHL this season but has really impressed the Jokers coaching staff.

SPEZZA SIGNS LONG TERM DEAL

Panthers GM IronMike has locked up one of his greatest young talents. Jason Spezza who is having another fine season at the young age of 23 has agreed to a long term deal.

Spezza has 27 goals and 40 helpers for 67 points in 65 games. He leads the team in hits (149), shots (198), game winners (6) and power-play goals (9).

The deal is worth $13m over the next 4 seasons. It is also believed he asked for and received a signing bonus and a no trade clause.

VAN IMPE LEADS CATS DEFENSE

At $620,000 per season, Darren Van Impe is one of the best values on the Panthers team. The veteran rearguard leads all Panthers defenseman in goals (8) and points (29). Plus he has more points than regular Florida forwards Nathan Horton, Marc Savard, Jay Pandolfo and Jarkko Ruutu.

Van Impe has already surpassed his totals from one year ago and is making a huge case for coming back to the Panthers next season.

PLAYOFF RUN OFF COURSE

The Panthers have lost three-of-four and appear to be drifting away from the 8th and final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference. The surging Cats were making a big push towards the playoffs just a half dozen games ago. They had silently crept to within four points of the playoffs. But two 4-3 defeats at the hands of the Hurricanes and a dreadful 7-6 loss to the bottom feeding Thrashers have the Cats now 9 points away for the final seed.
